August 4, 2015, marks the centennial of the lighting of streetlights in downtown Gillette and since 1915, the City of Gillette Utilities Department has provided power to the citizens and to the Gillette community.

Many businesses and homeowners signed up to be connected to the Electric Light Plant system and some of those businesses and homes are still standing today.

Over the past 100 years, the initial few hours of service during the night was extended due to the longer winter nights and then to a 24 hour service on July 13, 1917.

In the summer of 1920, improvements were made to double the capacity to keep pace with an ever-growing community and improvements continue to be made with fiber, equipment upgrades and maintenance of the existing infrastructure.

The City of Gillette Electric Utility has grown from the first few businesses and homes in 1915, to now proudly serving more than 15,300 customers.
